Automattic Inc., behind WordPress.com, with the support of Google, start-up ConsenSys and other partners, is launching a new “low-cost” publishing platform Newspack, which will use blockchain technology. It is assumed that it is most suitable for small and medium-sized publications and is designed to overcome the obstacles to the creation of economically sustainable models in the field of journalism, especially at the local level.
In the beta version, the platform can be launched at the end of July of this year, and until February 1, editorial staff interested in the project are invited to submit an application to participate in its development. Prior to launching the platform, the initiative will be funded by Automattic, and then the operational commission for its participants will be $ 1-2 thousand per month. Total development time allocated to the end of January 2020.
At this stage, Google supported the initiative financially, investing $ 1.2 million in it, ConsenSys – $ 350,000, Lenfest Journalism Institute – $ 400,000, and the Knight Foundation – $ 250,000. ConsenSys will also provide a new generation platform the opportunity to use the developments of the subsidiary Civil Media project: for example, a plugin with which content can be archived in a decentralized network.
